TAMPA - In the wake of a rape suspect's escape last year, multiple layers of razor wire are being added to the fence surrounding Falkenburg Road Jail.
"They're about halfway done right now," Col. Jim Previtera said today.
After a search that lasted nearly a week, deputies found inmate Raymond Marston on Oct. 30 hiding near the same bridge where authorities say he raped a woman in May 2008. Marston escaped from jail as he was being escorted to a medical clinic.
After the escape, "We obviously identified some things we needed to fix, and so we're fixing them," Previtera said.
The total cost of the Maze Razor Ribbon is $292,453.77, jail officials say. Jacksonville-based Abba Construction Inc. is the general contractor and Smith Fence is the subcontractor.
The razor wire fence is 41,400 linear feet long. Work should be completed within two weeks, Previtera said.
Marston, now identified as an escape risk, is being held without bail in Orient Road Jail. He faces charges including sexual battery, kidnapping and escape; a trial is set for August |
